Bibilical usage of the phrase baptism  in the new testament

The term " baptism in the holy spirit" is said to have been derived from the holy prophecy of John the baptism. " the expression to baptise within the holy spirit and fire was original with john. Francis martin alluding to various expressions and themes in the traditional anterior to him that speaks of punishment, purification and, in the later tradition of blessing " he says:

That the combination of spirit and fire in a liquid imaginary is used to speak of a coming punishment. " His lips are filled with fury , his tongue is a consuming fire; his breath (rush) like a rushing to rent rising up the neck" (is. 30:27, also is. 30:33, PS 11:6,esdr 13:10-11, Gen r 83.5). The same combination is used to describe God's purifying action : " when the lord will wash away the stains from the daughters of soon, and cleanse the blood from Jerusalem by a spirit of Judgement and a spirit of burning " (is. 4:4)... The two aspects, punishment and purification, are to be found as well in connection with the spirit of the lord without any reference to fire. The branch to spring from Jesse will " strike the land with the rod of his mouth and with the breath (ruah) of his lips , he will slay the wicked" (is. 11:4) ... However the promise if purification and subsequent blessings is most prominent in the text that speaks of the "pouring out" or "sprinkling"  the people with the spirit  of the lord. It is probably that first use of the image is to be found in Ez. 39:29: "no longer will I hide my face from them, for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of is real says YHWH God."

This prophecy of john the baptism is mentioned four times in the Gospel and twice in Acts. Accordingly to Francis Martin, " the question arises, how did the various NT writers understand this prophesy and how did they see it fulfill? In order to answer this question we must first understand how NT prophesy is recorded and how its fulfilment is indicated. " let us now examine this Baptists prophesy in the synoptic Tradition.
